During the mid 1970's, a group of young parents started to investigate the options available for Judaic and Secular education for their children. Upon hearing about Day Schools around the country they were intrigued with the idea of a school combining quality general studies with an intensive Judaic curriculum.

The core group worked tirelessly, raising money and registering potential students. Two years later, in the Fall of 1977, the Hebrew Day School of Central Florida opened in the education wing of Temple Israel. Some 43 children were enrolled from Kindergarten through Third grade.

During the early 1980's a group of visionary communal leaders imagined a central Jewish campus adjacent to the Jewish Community Center. The facility would house a school building for the Day School as well as nursery school, a Holocaust Education Center, and Federation offices. Because of their persistence and commitment, the community was able to gather its resources. In September 1986, the Hebrew Day School of Central Florida opened its doors in a beautiful new facility which included modern classrooms, computer lab, library, art room and multipurpose room. We opened the first phase of our expansion with Building B in August 2004.

Because of the determination of a few dreamers - parents, the community, Jewish Federation - and the incredible talent of the professional and lay leadership, today the Hebrew Day School of Central Florida is firmly rooted in the Jewish life of Orlando. Our current enrollment is 250 students and growing.
